Security Gateway (SGW) Explained: FCA, Mercedes-Benz and VAG SFD2

You connect a diagnostic tool to a newer Jeep, Mercedes or VW, read the fault codes – and then the tool refuses to clear them, run an active test or code a module. The reason is almost always the Security Gateway (SGW). This guide explains what it is, which vehicles have it, and how workshops get access.

What is a Security Gateway?

A Security Gateway is a control unit that sits between the OBD2 port and the vehicle's internal networks. It was introduced to protect cars against unauthorized access and cyber attacks. In practice it works like a lock:

  • Reading – fault codes and live data can usually be read without authorization.
  • Writing – clearing codes, active tests, coding, adaptations and programming are blocked until the tool is authorized.

Authorization is done online: the diagnostic tool (or its user) is registered with the manufacturer or an approved service, and the gateway is unlocked for the session.

Which brands use a Security Gateway?

ManufacturerNameVehicles affected
FCA / Stellantis – Fiat, Jeep, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, RamSGWMany models from around model year 2018
Mercedes-BenzSGWNewer model generations, roughly from 2021
Volkswagen Group – VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, CupraSFD / SFD2SFD from the Golf 8 generation (MQB Evo); SFD2 on newer models
Renault, Nissan, Hyundai, Kia and othersVariousSelected newer models

Coverage depends on model, year and region, and grows every year. If you are unsure, send us the VIN and we will check.

FCA SGW

FCA was among the first to lock the diagnostic port. Without authorization, you can read codes but cannot clear them or run most active tests and service functions. With a registered, authorized tool, the gateway is unlocked for the diagnostic session. An older workaround was a bypass cable behind the gateway, but tool-based authorization is the clean, fast solution.

Mercedes-Benz SGW

On newer Mercedes models, the gateway requires online authentication for write functions. Without it, coding, adaptations and many service resets are not possible from an aftermarket tool.

VAG SFD and SFD2

Volkswagen Group calls its system SFD (Schutz Fahrzeug Diagnose). Individual control units are locked and must be unlocked online before coding or adaptation. SFD2 is the newer version on recent models. It needs updated tool support, so an SFD unlock alone is not enough for SFD2 vehicles.

How to get access with your tool

Most professional tools support gateway access through a paid unlock license per brand. For MUCAR tools (892BT and 892BT Pro) these are available at ml24:

The TOPDON ONE Plus supports FCA SGW, VAG SFD and the Renault/Nissan gateway (access cards sold separately). The Autel MaxiSys Ultra EV supports gateway access for FCA, Nissan, Hyundai/Kia, Renault, Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen and Audi.

Plan it into the cost

Many workshops compare tools only by their purchase price. If you work on many Jeeps, Mercedes or newer VW Group cars, add the gateway licenses you need to the price – they are usually yearly. A tool without access for your main brands will read codes but will not finish the job.

Frequently asked questions

Can I read fault codes without an unlock?

Usually yes. The gateway mainly blocks writing: clearing codes, active tests, coding and programming.

Do I need internet for gateway access?

Yes. Authorization is done online during the diagnostic session.

Is the unlock license tied to one tool?

Yes, licenses are activated on a specific tool (serial number).

Is a bypass cable still an option?

On some FCA models a bypass cable works, but it means removing trim panels and is not possible on every vehicle. Tool-based authorization is faster and cleaner.

Conclusion

The Security Gateway is now standard on many new cars. Check which brands you work on most, and make sure your tool supports access for them before you buy. Not sure which license you need? Send us your tool's serial number and a VIN via WhatsApp or email.
